Round-Up Ready Beings Fight Climate Change
As was reported in various news outlets, “hundreds of thousands of migratory birds” were discovered “falling out of the sky” in the ecologically-challenged American Southwest.
This story broke my heart. I had to pull over this morning and weep. All of the birds mentioned are insectivores. And if, as cited, they were indeed emaciated, then they were not getting enough insects to eat.
Anyone with eyes knows that we are wiping out insects by the millions; moreover, the toxins we release into the environment suppress immune systems, thus allowing wildlife (and our now covid-friendly selves) to become more susceptible to becoming ill. Poor diets and a toxic environment are a deadly combination. It’s probably what killed our avian victims, and it is probably slowly killing us. One virus at a time.
But it also needs to be stressed that we can’t allow “the climate crisis” to overwhelm or obscure the much more tangible negative effects of human activity on the environment. “Fighting climate change” is fast-becoming our next “war on terror” or “war on drugs,” where its abstruseness of concept and attendant vagaries related to resolution will only lead to governments pretending to do something for the sake of maintaining appearances, or reacting irresponsibly and unethically for the sole reason of placating the public’s demands for action “to save the planet.”
The war on terror produced the deaths of untold thousands of innocent people; and the war on drugs resulted in the arrests and subsequent draconian sentencing of thousands of petty criminals.
Genetically-modified “Round-Up Ready” (human) beings living benevolent lives of green consumption are a poor substitute for a healthy and biodiverse planet.
