Where Good Vibes Go to Die

Today Chris shares some thoughts on techno-utopianism — namely, what characterizes it? He proffers six distinctives and asks the guys to reflect with him on them. He suggests that while very few people would say they’re on board with all six, most people seem to at least think that technology inevitably makes the world a better place. But is that necessarily so, or are we presented with a set of tradeoffs when it comes to technology?

Russia mega oil merger

Moscow is working on a plan to merge its biggest oil companies into a single national champion, a deal that would tighten President Vladimir Putin’s grip on global energy markets and Russia’s wartime economy. Under one scenario being discussed, state-backed giant Rosneft Oil would absorb fellow state producer Gazprom Neft — a subsidiary of natural-gas exporter Gazprom — and independently-owned Lukoil, people familiar with the discussions said. All three are under U.S. sanctions.

A Palestinian Scholar Explains Why Kamala Harris Lost
Yousef Munayyer breaks down everything the Dems did to tank the election
KATIE HALPER AND AARON MATÉ
“Trump did not convince a lot of Biden voters to become Trump voters,” says Palestinian-American scholar Yousef Munayyer in his postmortem of the Democrats’ disastrous performance in the 2024 election. “Harris failed to convince Biden voters to become Harris voters. And that ended up deciding this election.”
The Democrats, Munayyer explains, led four years of economic hardship for the working class and continued to double down on their support for a genocide in Gaza. “This was a change election. People wanted something different.”
And when Democrats showed up with nothing, voters stayed home. “For some people,” he tells us, “it was just a moral question. There was just no way that they could cast their ballot for someone who could not say that what was happening [in Gaza] was wrong, let alone do something about it.”
The Biden-Harris administration’s enabling of Israel’s genocide even disillusioned voters who don’t care about the Middle East.
“And whether you care about Palestinians or don’t care about Palestinians,” Munayyer explains, “the fact that your government seems to be more concerned with issues thousands of miles away than the issues that impact you at home reinforces the message that these people don’t get me. They don’t care about me.”
So why, if it’s such a losing message, did Harris stick so tightly to her support for Israel?
“The only sort of rational explanation for doing this is that parties don’t just think about one election. They think about their ability to be competitive over many elections over time. And for that, money is more important than votes. If they were facing the choice between risking several hundred thousand votes in some of the key states or potentially losing major contributions from pro-Israel donors for the next generation, maybe they calculated that they’ll take the loss here.”
Subscribe for the full interview with Yousef Munayyer on how Democrats allowed Trump to claim the mantle of being the anti-war, working class champion, Israel’s recent confirmation of its plan for ethnic cleansing in Northern Gaza, and a terrible victory-lap video in which AIPAC brags about how much it influenced US elections.

Viral video reveals Israeli hooligans attacked Dutch police while instigating Amsterdam unrest
Footage by a teenage YouTuber shows Tel Aviv Maccabi hooligans attacking Dutch police while pelting private homes with stones and hunting victims with metal pipes. The video offers the clearest evidence yet Israeli ultras provoked the violence which gripped the city.
A November 8 video report by a 16-year-old who publishes YouTube reports under the moniker “Bender” provided extensive on-the-ground footage of a mob of armed Tel Aviv Maccabi ultras hunting victims, throwing metal poles at police vehicles, threatening journalists, and even being detained after attacking undercover police officers.

Why Harris Lost
“Fascism” gets you only so far.
This was an angry election; none of that “which candidate would you rather have a beer with” stuff here. Trump is an angry man representing angry constituents. Harris was angry that things were not going her way and constantly expressed the Hillary-esque idea “How could I possibly be losing to a guy like Trump?” Both sides prioritized personal attacks over policy. At times it felt like elementary-school playground stuff, name-calling, but in the end it was much more serious than that. Harris lost because she tried to make “Trump is a fascist” her closing argument, and no one was listening anymore. The girl had cried wolf for the last time.
And Liz Cheney — in what alternate universe did it seem like a good idea to bring in the Cheney family to help support a Democrat with progressive followers? Dick is personally responsible for the deaths of millions and Liz does not believe in abortion (or she didn’t used to, anyhow). Where are the Democratic votes in that pile of war-mongering neoconism?
When asked whether Trump or Harris “would do a better job” of “defending against threats to democracy,” 43 percent picked Trump, while 40 percent chose Harris. This was the same result when Biden was the nominee. While over half said that threats to democracy were important to them, the voters trusted Trump (44 percent) more than Biden (33 percent) to protect democracy.
