Youth

  • Logan Square, Chicago: a) Close friends and family. b) Different values than peers: Not rebellious in any traditional sense: No sex, drugs or rock n’roll. c) Strong interest in nature and the outdoors, as well as independent learning: Forest preserves and library. d) Excelled in school

High School

  • Growing interest in “wine, women and song”
  • a) Disillusionment with all three.
  • b) Discovery of alternative radio (WNUR, WZRD and WXRT (“The Big Beat” and “Local Anesthetic”).
  • c) Become politically aware due to green/ecology concerns, along with animal rights
  • d) Discovery of punk connects political awareness to alienation
  • Straightedge

  • Less promiscuous
